OpenBook & Kurzweil 1000

Making graphics-based text accessible to the visually impaired

OpenBook™ converts printed documents or graphic-based text into an electronic text format on your PC, using quality speech and the latest optical character recognition (OCR) technology. Easy switching between the Nuance OmniPage® and ABBYY FineReader® OCR engines allows you to choose the OCR engine that works best for your particular use. You also can choose between two leading text-to-speech software synthesizers: RealSpeak™ Solo (natural, human-sounding voices) or Eloquence (efficient synthesized speech that often is preferred for editing and document skimming). Works with Pearl Portable Scanner

Kurzweil 1000TM is award-winning software that makes printed or electronic text readily available to people who are blind or visually impaired. It combines accessibility, communication and productivity tools to ease and enhance their reading, writing and learning experience. Works with HoverCam Portable Scanner

New features in Kurzweil 1000 Version 13 include:

• Camera support for HoverCam, in addition to ABiSee’s Zoom-Ex and Eye-Pal.
• ePub support that allows reading of ePub documents and the ability to write ePub documents that can be read on portable devices, such as an iPhone.
• Support for Microsoft Speech Platform, giving users access to more than a dozen additional text-to-speech voices in a variety of languages.
• The ability to choose the audio output device for a selected voice.
• OCR updates to ABBYY FineReader 10 and ScanSoft 18 which increases accuracy when recognizing documents and reduces time spent fixing errors in recognition.

The software speaks text aloud in a variety of natural-sounding voices that can be modified to suit individual preferences. In addition, it provides users with document creation and editing as well as study skills capabilities for note taking, summarizing and outlining text.

Kurzweil 1000 delivers quick access to a wealth of information including online books, magazines and encyclopedias so users can pursue any reading interests. They can also take their reading wherever they go by sending files to Braille note takers and embossers as well as portable devices such as DAISY and MP3 audio players.

Kurzweil 1000 is easy to use for beginners, yet powerful and flexible for advanced users. With its wide array of useful features, users save time and gain independence – whether at home, at school, or at work.
